The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme
(GEF-SGP) was established in 1992 and helps developing
countries fund projects related to biodiversity, climate
change, international waters, ozone layer depletion,
land degradation, and persistent organic pollutants
(POPs).
The
Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (SGP)
is implemented by UNDP on behalf of the three implementing
agencies of the GEF–UNDP, the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP) and the World Bank and is executed
by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
Since
its inception in 1992, the SGP has promoted grassroot
actions to address global environmental concerns. The SGP aims to deliver global environmental benefits in
the GEF focal areas of biodiversity conservation, climate
change mitigation, protection of international waters,
prevention of land degradation, and elimination of persistent
organic pollutants (POPs) through community-based approaches.
In
Zambia, a workshop was held in July 2006 to introduce
stakeholders to the GEF Small Grants Programme and it
officially started on 1st February 2008 with the appointment
of the National Coordinator. During the same month,
a National Hosting Institution (NHI) was appointed in
the name of Keepers Zambia Foundation (KZF).
